Suspended CPI-M leader Tanmay Bhattacharya
An FIR has been lodged against former CPI-M legislator and senior leader Tanmay Bhattacharya, who was suspended by his party yesterday, after a female journalist accused him of sexual harassment. Bhattacharya has been summoned to the police station today morning.

The FIR has been filed at Baranagar Police Station under which Bhattacharya’s residence falls. The statement of the alleged victim was also recorded.

The CPI-M on Sunday afternoon suspended veteran party leader Bhattacharya after a woman reporter, who is reportedly attached to an independent YouTube channel, made allegations in her Facebook live against Bhattacharya and accused him of sexual harassment with her while she was interviewing him at his residence.

Bhattacharya was summoned to police station today morning. After his interrogation, he addressed media and described the incident as “a big conspiracy.”

“This kind of incident did not happen at all. It is completely lie. She interviewed me and went to another assignment. I suggested her some questions also,” Bhattacharya said.

The suspension of Bhattacharya came last evening after a woman reporter, who is reportedly attached to an independent Youtube channel, made allegations in her Facebook Live against Bhattacharya. She accused Bhattacharya of making “sexually inappropriate” behaviour with her at his residence while she was interviewing him.

“CPI(M) always takes such complaints quite seriously. The party does not endorse such an alleged action on part of Tanmay Bhattacharya with a lady journalist who was there because of her professional compulsions. Such actions do not fall in line with the expectations of the CPI(M) leadership from their party workers and sympathisers,” the statement issued by the CPI(M) state committee read.

“Considering the gravity of the allegations, Tanmay Bhattacharya has been suspended from the party. The allegations of the lady journalist have been forwarded to the internal complaints committee of the party. On the basis of the recommendations of the internal complaints committee future actions will be taken,” the press statement read.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh demanded the arrest of Bhattacharya immediately. “Why has Tanmay Bhattacharya not been arrested till now? The assaulted victim has already given her statement in social media. Now, will there be a human-chain demanding Bhattacharya’s arrest?,” Ghosh said on social media.
