Pan Card is a very important document in today's time. It is issued by NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited). It contains some information like your name, date of birth, and a 10-digit alphanumeric number. From opening a bank account to filing an ITR, a PAN card is very much needed. It is also considered very useful in terms of preventing tax evasion. In today's time, most people have a PAN Card, but do you know how long is the validity of your PAN card? Does a PAN card also have an expiry date? Most people will not know the answer to this. Let us tell you.

Does your PAN card expire?

PAN Card does not have any expiry, meaning once you have a PAN card, its validity remains for a lifetime. Therefore, after getting a PAN card, you do not need to worry about its expiry. Yes, if your PAN card is lost or damaged, then you can get it made again. NSDL also provides you the facility to get a duplicate PAN card.

You cannot keep more than one PAN card.

According to the rules of the Income Tax Department, a person should have only one PAN card. Keeping more than one PAN card is illegal. Action can be taken against it. Under the provisions of Section 272B of the Income Tax Act 1961, keeping more than one PAN card can attract a fine of Rs 10,000 or a minimum sentence of 6 months, or both punishment and fine. If by mistake you have two PAN cards, then correct this mistake in time and surrender one PAN card.

You can surrender your PAN card both online and offline. To surrender online, you will have to go to the NSDL website.

After this, from the Application Type drop-down, select the Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data/Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in existing PAN Data) option.

Fill out the form and submit it. After submitting the form, your request will be registered. After this, a token number will be sent to your email ID.

Note the token number and continue the process by clicking on Continue with PAN Application Form given below. Now a new web page will open. On this page, choose the option of Submit scanned images through e-Sign.

On the bottom left side of the page, you will have to fill in the details of the PAN card that you want to keep with you. Fill in the requested information, and after this choose the option of Next.

After this, upload the requested documents like photos, signature, addresses, identity cards, etc. Make payment wherever required. After payment, you will see a receipt to download. Download it and keep it safe.

Now send two photographs along with a copy of the receipt to the NSDL office. Before sending the receipt, label the envelope with the Application for PAN cancellation and the receipt number. Also, send a letter to the officer who listed the duplicate PAN details and request to cancel it.
