National Highways warned on October 30 of "severe delays" on the M56 after two lanes out of three were closed eastbound in Cheshire between J14 Hapsford Interchange (Stanlow, Helsby A5117; Chester Services) and J12 Rocksavage Interchange (Runcorn, Liverpool John Lennon Airport, Widnes, Northwich A557).
Two of the three lanes were closed due to an emergency roadworks operation being carried out to replace a displaced drainage cover.
The organisation has since announced that the repairs are complete and both lanes are now open.
But in an update, National Highways: Northwest warned drivers that: "SEVERE delays of 3 hours remain between the and J12 with 11 miles of congestion but this should now start to ease."
