Delhi's Air Quality Plummets To 'Very Poor', Worst AQI On Diwali Day In 3 Years

After a few less-polluted days, Delhi’s air quality plunged to “very poor" on the day of Diwali.  According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) daily bulletin, the city’s air quality index (AQI) slipped from 307 on Wednesday to 328 today.

The city was seen covered with a layer of smog early in the morning. Anand Vihar recorded the highest AQI with 419 which falls under the ‘Severe’ category.

Delhi recorded an AQI of 218 on Diwali day in 2023, 312 in 2022, 382 in 2021, 414 in 2020, 337 in 2019, 281 in 2018, 319 in 2017, and 431 in 2016, according to the CPCB data.

Yesterday, several areas in the city had an AQI ranging between 200 and 300 under the ‘Poor’ section, however, on the day the country celebrates Diwali, the air quality in various localities in Delhi deteriorated to ‘Very Poor’.

Noida recorded a ‘Poor’ air quality, according to the Central Pollution Control Board data at 8 am.

AQI in Gurugram

Gurugram, which is also a part of the National Capital Region (NCR), recorded ‘Poor’ air quality at 8 am.

An AQI between 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 is satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201-300 is poor, 301-400 is very poor, and 401-500 is severe.
