Australian travel magazine Lonely Planet has named Chiang Mai in Thailand, renowned for its iconic lantern festival, as one of the top 10 cities in the world to visit in 2025.

It was also the only Southeast Asian destination featured in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel guide.

Chiang Mai ranked fourth after Toulouse in France, Puducherry in India, and Bansko in Bulgaria.

“Chiang Mai captivates visitors with its elegant fusion of distinctive flavors. In this city, greetings often center around asking if you’ve eaten yet, highlighting the significance of food in Thai culture,” Lonely Planet described.

The magazine’s editors recommended experiencing the annual Chiang Mai Food Festival in January, exploring the bustling Kad Baan Hor Market on Friday mornings, or enjoying traditional Lanna dining with a “Khantoke,” a round rattan tray serving various authentic northern Thai dishes and national favorites, paired with traditional theater performances at the Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center.

The city is also known for the Yi Peng Festival, or Sky Lantern Festival, a traditional celebration that fills the night sky with floating lanterns.

The list was curated by leading travel experts, considering factors such as unique experiences, standout features, and the destination’s commitment to sustainability, community development, and diversity.
