Iconic fashion designer Rohit Bal passes away at 63

The Indian fashion industry went into mourning on Friday following the passing of renowned designer Rohit Bal at the age of 63. Known for his innovative designs and contributions to Indian fashion, Bal's work has left an indelible mark on the industry.

The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) issued a heartfelt statement expressing their condolences.

"We mourn the passing of Legendary designer Rohit Bal. He was a founding member of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). Known for his unique blend of traditional patterns with modern sensibilities, Bal’s work redefined Indian fashion, and inspired generations. His legacy of artistry, and innovation along with forward thinking will live on in the fashion world. Rest in peace GUDDA. You are a legend," the association wrote in a post on social media platform Instagram.

Several people from in and around the fashion industry also took to social media to mourn the departing of the Kashmiri fashion designing icon.

"Heartbroken to say goodbye to an incredible friend. You brought so much light, laughter, and kindness into the lives of everyone around you. I’m grateful for every moment we shared, every laugh, every conversation. You’ll be missed beyond words, but your spirit will live on in all of us. Rest peacefully, my friend," wrote Raymond Chairman and Managing Director Gautam Singhania on X (formerly Twitter).

Meanwhile, Salman Nizami, Chief Spokesperson of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party wrote in a post, "Shocked to hear about the passing of a talented designer #RohitBal who was from Kashmir & made a remarkable name in the fashion industry. His loss is truly unfortunate. My heartfelt condolences to his family and well-wishers. RIP!"

Bal’s creations were celebrated not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for their cultural significance. He often drew inspiration from India's rich heritage, seamlessly blending it with modern sensibilities. His shows were a highlight at various fashion weeks, captivating audiences with their elegance and creativity.

In October, Bal had made a triumphant return to the runway nearly a year after a health scare, showcasing his collection "Kaaynaat: A Bloom in the Universe" at the grand finale of Lakmé Fashion Week. Bal had been struggling with health issues for some time; in 2023, he was hospitalised at Medanta Hospital in Delhi for heart ailments.

Weeks after his hospital admission, Bal shared a heartfelt post expressing gratitude for the get-well-soon wishes he received.

"Dear friends, family and supporters, I am deeply touched by your outpouring of love and prayers during my illness. Your support has been a beacon of hope and strength, helping me on my journey to recovery. As I heal, I am reminded of the resilience of our bond and our shared dreams.. and I assure you, the show must go on. Your faith in our vision is the driving force behind its continued success. Thank you for being my light in these challenging times. Let's keep moving forward with hope and courage," the Srinagar-born designer posted.

The celebrated designer graduated with honors in History from the prestigious St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi. After spending a few years in his family’s export business to gain valuable experience, he launched his own label and designer line in 1990, marking the beginning of an illustrious career.
