Vikram Singh Punia a prominent businessman originally from Rajasthan has emerged as a leading figure in Russia’s pharmaceutical industry. Since founding Pharmasyntez in 1997 he has transformed the company into a significant player in the global market specializing in the production of a wide range of vaccines and medications. With operations that extend across countries such as India and China Pharmasyntez generates an impressive annual revenue running into crores of rupees. Based in Irkutsk the company is dedicated to providing high-quality and affordable medicines for various ailments including diabetes hepatitis tuberculosis HIV cancer and more thereby significantly contributing to the health and well-being of citizens in India and beyond.
Who is Vikram Singh Punia
Vikram Singh Punia moved to Russia at the age of 19. Born in March 1973 in Jaipur he completed his schooling in Rajasthan and graduated from Birla High School in Pilani. In an interview Vikram shared that he went to Russia in 1992 through a student exchange program to pursue higher education in medicine. Eventually he decided to settle there permanently relinquishing his Indian citizenship to become a Russian citizen.
Despite moving to Russia Vikram maintains a strong connection to India. Since 2017 he has been a board member of the India-Russia Business Cooperation Council where he assists Indian entrepreneurs aiming to establish businesses in Russia by helping them navigate the process.
What does Pharmasyntez specialises in?
His company Pharmasyntez specializes in manufacturing a wide range of vaccines and medicines. Vikram initially focused on producing drugs for tuberculosis treatment. Today Pharmasyntez operates five manufacturing plants in Russia which accounts for 80 per cent of the world’s tuberculosis medication production. The company also provides affordable treatments for HIV cancer and other serious illnesses.
In addition Pharmasyntez manufactures medications for oncology and Type-2 diabetes management. According to a report from last September the company is also planning to enter the production of dialysis drugs with an expected investment of USD 20 to USD 30 million. According to media reports Pharmasyntez also contributed to the production of Russias Sputnik vaccine during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He was awarded a Medal for Entrepreneurial Merit by the Irkutsk Region Government in 2017.

According to Forbes Vikram’s net worth exceeds USD 1 billion (around Rs 84000 crore). His company Pharmasyntez generates annual revenues in the hundreds of crores. As per data on the companys official website its revenue grew by 26 per cent during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 reaching approximately 41 billion rubles (around Rs. 3553 crore).
However revenue declined slightly after the pandemic dropping to 38.5 billion rubles in 2022 and 33.4 billion rubles in 2023. Reports suggest that Pharmasyntez is now working on new projects to expand its operations.
