The toll tax rates at Niwada toll plaza on the GT Road Highway in Kanpur have risen significantly, with car drivers now paying ₹135, up from ₹95. This 42% increase impacts travelers heading toward Aligarh, Delhi, Kannauj, and Bilhaur. Toll rates for heavy vehicles have also seen a sharp rise, reaching up to 43%.
The updated toll rates were introduced after the construction of an elevated flyover between Mandhana and IIT Kanpur, which is part of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) project to expand the Kanpur-Aligarh route into a four-lane highway. The revised rates took effect from the night of November 2-3, affecting both light and commercial vehicles using this route.
These new rates pose additional costs for regular commuters, especially in Bilhaur and Kannauj. To offset this, NHAI has introduced a monthly pass for local, non-commercial vehicles within a 20-km radius of Niwada toll plaza, costing ₹340 for cars and light vehicles. Online registration is required to obtain the monthly pass, which can help make frequent travel more affordable for residents of Kanpur and surrounding areas.
NHAI Project Manager Aman Rohilla confirmed the toll increase, explaining that with the completion of the Kanpur-Aligarh highway and the elevated flyover, the toll rates at Niwada toll plaza, Shivrajpur, have been adjusted accordingly to reflect the upgrades made to the route.
