All government buildings in Bihar must have new smart electricity meters installed by November 30, as directed by the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the state power distribution companies. The CMD emphasized that metering agencies should educate consumers on how smart meters work and the benefits they provide before installation.
During a review meeting on Monday, CMD Pankaj Kumar Pal instructed officials to expedite the installation of smart prepaid electricity meters in all government buildings by the end of November. The meeting included South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited’s Managing Director Mahendra Kumar, North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited’s Managing Director Dr. Nilesh Deore, as well as senior officials and representatives of metering agencies.
The CMD stressed that metering agencies must clearly communicate the functionality and advantages of smart meters to consumers prior to installation. Additionally, the installation of push buttons in all smart meters is mandatory. The CMD issued a strict warning to two agencies, NCC and High Print, for failing to complete their work on schedule.
Smart meter installation is progressing rapidly across Bihar, though some residents have voiced concerns. Despite this, the government is working to increase public awareness of the advantages of smart meters. Political debate surrounding the implementation of smart meters also continues in the state.
