According to the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS), on November 5, General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff of India, was visited by Brigadier Omar Khan of the Guyana Defence Forces.

Enhancing bilateral defense cooperation, regional stability, maritime security, and mutual understanding were the main topics of discussion.

In addition to highlighting Guyana’s expanding domestic defense manufacturing capabilities via the “Make in India” and “Make for the World” programs, General Chauhan offered India’s cooperation for holding military training there.

“Brigadier Omar Khan, CDS Guyana, leads an empowered delegation on a five-day visit to India,” HQ IDS said in a post on X. He will also communicate with the Defense Secretary and the Service Chiefs. The team will travel around the nation to visit significant defense manufacturing centers and key defense public sector undertakings (DPSUs).

In an increasingly complicated global security context, the conversation between Guyanese and Indian defense chiefs demonstrates a commitment to ensuring regional stability in addition to strengthening military connections. By addressing common security problems, the partnership highlights the need for a unified strategy in the face of new threats.

Since 1965, India and Guyana have maintained strong diplomatic ties via a number of high-level meetings. The foundation for future collaboration was created by the founding of the Indian Commission in Georgetown, which became a full-fledged High Commission in 1968 upon Guyana’s independence.

Co-chaired by India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Hugh Hilton Todd, the India-Guyana Joint Commission had its fourth session in May 2008 and its fifth session in April 2023.

To improve collaboration in a variety of fields, including agriculture, health, defense, and technological innovation, eight Joint Working Groups have been established. Through bilateral visits and cooperative projects, this foundation has developed a solid collaboration that is still growing and strengthening ties between the two countries.
