The Yorkshire Vet star Martin Paterson was confronted with what he termed his 'most challenging surgery ever' as he embarked on an emergency procedure to save a dog's life.

The popular Channel 5 series made its comeback on our screens last Tuesday evening, with senior surgeon Martin gearing up for one of his most significant operations to date on a three-month-old puppy who was gravely ill.

Acknowledging the difficulty ahead, Martin confessed: "Today we've got a really challenging case. We've got a little dog Luna, who is a tiny little three month old chihuahua and she has been having some issues with her breathing."

The young pup, named Luna, was suffering from fluid leakage into her chest, compressing her lungs and severely affecting her breathing, preventing her heart from expanding properly.

Delving into the complexities of the operation, Martin said: "This is not the type of surgery we do everyday and it's an unusual condition and she's an unusual dog to have it in, so we are a bit apprehensive about how things are going to go today," reports .

Highlighting the delicate nature of the procedure, he added: "She is only three months old and weighs just 1.8 kilos, which is the same weight of a bag of sugar so it really is micro surgery. This is not a surgery I have ever done before."

Despite the challenges, Martin and his dedicated team poured their utmost efforts into the surgery, and initially, it seemed their hard work paid off as Luna awoke from the operation seemingly on the road to recovery.

However, there was a heartbreaking twist when Martin disclosed that following a review, Luna had to undergo further surgery with a significant risk she might not survive. Following a critical operation, an elated Martin shared the good news stating: "Luna is back in the intensive care unit and she is a tough little cookie so we just have to keep a close watch on her for the next few hours."

After a week of separation from their beloved pet, the family experienced a tearful reunion with young Libby and her mother Claire finally being able to hold Luna again. An emotional Claire fought back tears as she expressed: "It has been an absolute rollercoaster and I can't even put into words what this week has been like."

Addressing her daughter, she added: "You've been telling me to stop crying haven't you but I'm not going to cry this time. Libby chimed in with encouragement: "You need to stay positive."

Observing the touching moment, Martin remarked: "It makes it all worthwhile. She is such a happy little soul."
