was spotted in tears after she got pelted with mud in the midst of a visit to flood-hit .

In support of their country, and Queen Letizia paid a visit on Sunday to one of the areas most badly hit by the floods.

As the couple walked alongside the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, they were pelted with mud by some angered members of the public. Both the Queen and King were left with mud on their skin and clothes.

Despite this, the anger appeared directed not at the sovereign and his spouse specifically but at the entire state for its management of the worst natural disaster in Spain's living memory. Indeed, some of the locals appeared to be happy to see the royals in attendance.

During an emotional moment, the Queen was pictured speaking to a woman. Comforting her as she wept, Queen Letizia could also be seen with her head in her hands, with the royal being brought to tears by the devastation.

Prior to the royal visit, their representatives posted on : "Our deep gratitude for the messages of condolence, consolation, support and solidarity with the Spanish people due to the devastating consequences of the DANA."

Following the King and Queen's visit, they also posted another message. This one read: "The [royals] have visited this morning the municipality of Paiporta (Valencia), one of the places seriously affected by the terrible DANA that we have suffered in our country."

Explaining why the Spanish King and Queen visited, their post read: "They wanted to be close to the neighbours, listen to them and know their situation, as well as thank the work of emergency services, state, regional and local forces and security forces, civil protection and NGOs that are working tirelessly in the rescue and recovery of basic supplies in the affected places, and with whom the [royals] have been in constant contact during these days."

In a sign that many appreciated the royal visit, one royal fan shared their appreciation for the King and Queen's move.

They commented: "While politicians and presidents flee, Their Majesties stay to suffer the mud and anguish of the crowd, to talk to the displaced and console the desperate. Long live the King, long live the Queen, long live Spain!"
