In Thursday’s Group A Elite match against Odisha, India batsman Shreyas Iyer scored his third first-class double century, continuing his outstanding play in the current Ranji Trophy.
Iyer struck 24 fours and nine sixes while scoring 233 runs off 228 balls at a strike rate of 102.19. After Odisha sent Mumbai in to bat, his innings, together with important contributions from Siddhesh Lad (169) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (92), helped the team reach 602/4 declared. At the moment, Odisha is engaged in their first innings of play.
After scoring 202 against Australia A in 2017 and a double ton against Punjab in 2015, this is Iyer’s third double-century in first-class cricket.
With 405 runs in four innings at an average of 101.25, including two hundreds, Iyer is currently the third-highest run scorer in the present Ranji Trophy season. 233 is his highest score.
He scored 142 in the last game against Maharashtra. He scored 0 and 30 in his season-opening Ranji match against Baroda.
After being removed off the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) central contract list this year because of doubts about his dedication to red-ball cricket, these significant scores would surely boost Iyer’s confidence.
Iyer captained the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL and was a member of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy-winning team this year. He amassed 351 runs at an average of 39.00 in 15 games, including two half-centuries.
Although he didn’t have a significant influence, he made his red-ball cricket comeback for Mumbai in the Buchi Babu competition. He amassed 154 runs at an average of 25.66 in three games (six innings) at the season-opening Duleep Trophy, including two half-centuries.
In addition, Iyer scored 57 and eight runs in two innings for Mumbai’s Irani Cup-winning squad against the Rest of India.
Prior to being pulled because of a decline in form, he last played Test cricket for India in February of this year. He has amassed 811 runs at an average of 36.86 in 14 Test matches, including five fifties and a century in 24 innings. He has a maximum test score of 105.
