Tottenham Hotspur lost 3-2 to a tenacious Galatasaray team on Thursday, ending their perfect start in the Europa League.
Victor Osimhen of Galatasaray put on an incredible display, scoring twice to lead the Turkish club to victory, while Will Lankshear, a teenage striker for Tottenham, had both success and heartbreak after scoring his first goal for the squad but subsequently being sent off.
Galatasaray had a brilliant start to the game as Yunus Akgun gave them the lead in the sixth minute. Akgun fired a strong half-volley from beyond the area, sending the ball hurtling into the goal and leaving Tottenham’s goalie defenseless.
Tottenham quickly equalized the score. Lankshear scored his first goal after Brennan Johnson squared a superb pass across the face of goal in the eighteenth minute. The 18-year-old striker’s goal seemed to turn the tide back in Spurs’ favor, and his confidence was evident.
But Victor Osimhen of Galatasaray quickly regained the initiative and put his club ahead shortly before halftime. Osimhen expertly cushioned a shot between two defenders after Dries Mertens lofted a well-placed pass into the penalty area in the 39th minute, sneaking it past the Tottenham keeper to give Galatasaray the lead again.
In the second half, Lankshear’s evening took a dramatic turn for the worst. Spurs were down to 10 men when he was given his second booking in the 60th minute for a poorly timed tackle. He was already on a yellow card. Tottenham was at a disadvantage after his departure, but they kept moving ahead.
With a burst of inventiveness in the 69th minute, Dominic Solanke, a replacement, rallied Spurs. Pedro Porro’s low cross was deftly back-heeled into the goal by Solanke, giving the visitors hope and bringing the score to 3-2. In the closing minutes, Tottenham showed tenacity by attempting to equalize and extend their winning streak.
But Tottenham failed to score a third goal in spite of their late attempts. After winning their first three games of the Europa League season, the outcome was their first defeat. Spurs are now in second position with nine points, one point behind Galatasaray, who have not lost.
