Synopsis

A woman in Bengaluru recently ignited a social media firestorm after revealing she was asked to pay a staggering Rs 5 lakh security deposit for a Rs 40,000-per-month apartment. The incident sparked outrage and a broader discussion about the city's increasingly unaffordable housing market, with many users expressing disbelief and frustration over the exorbitant demands of landlords.

Amid rising conversations on rent in India's IT capital, a woman in Bengaluru sparked a debate over the skyrocketing cost of renting in the city after she alleged that she was asked to pay a Rs 5 lakh security deposit for a Rs 40,000-per-month apartment.

Harnidh Kaur shared her frustration on social media, where her post quickly gained traction.

In many cities like Delhi, security deposits typically range from one to two months' rent. However, in Bengaluru, known for its soaring real estate prices, deposits can reach as high as five or even ten months’ rent. Social media users expressed disbelief over the Rs 5 lakh deposit, pointing out that it exceeds a year’s worth of rent, which would amount to Rs 4.8 lakh.

As the post gained traction, Kaur explained that she ultimately did not agree to rent the apartment due to the unreasonable deposit demand. She found the request unjustifiable and shared her decision with her followers, sparking a wider conversation about the rising cost of renting in Bengaluru.

'Bengaluru landlords are thieves'

The social media reaction was filled with shock and frustration. Fitness influencer Chirag Barjatya raised the question, "A year of deposit? When did this become the norm?" Another user expressed their discontent, saying, "Bengaluru house owners are thieves. They’ll make your life miserable when you vacate." The conversation quickly shifted to the challenges renters face in Bengaluru, where both rent and security deposits are spiraling out of control.

The post also reignited the ongoing debate about which city offers the best quality of life in India. While some users championed Delhi for its affordable living, efficient public transport, and overall convenience, others pointed to Bengaluru’s sky-high rents as a deterrent, making the city less attractive for many.

As the discussion evolved, some questioned whether buying a home might be a smarter financial move in such expensive real estate markets. Others took aim at "greedy" landlords, accusing them of driving up prices and pricing out potential tenants, leaving many to wonder if any affordable housing solutions exist for the growing urban population.
