Eamonn Holmes has weighed in on the debate surrounding who will replace Gary Lineker on Match Of The Day.
It has been confirmed that Gary will step down from the BBC show after the end of the season, but will continue to work with the BBC in 2026 to front the coverage of the World Cup.
Discussions have been flooding the internet about who might replace Lineker. Options have so far included Alex Scott, Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman and Dan Walker - but nothing has been confirmed.
During a chat on GB News, when one presenter suggested: "I still think Eamonn should have got the gig myself," his co-host Isabel added: "Oh you would have been brilliant, yeah, nobody knows more about football."
Eamonn then issued a furious rant, fuming: "See they also do this ridiculous thing in the BBC, it's always been the case, try and get a younger audience. So what does that mean? Get a younger host? And younger people do not watch television. So why are they wasting their time?"
When Isabel said: "They do with Match Of The Day, don't they? They watch it in bed on a Sunday with a hangover," Eamonn fired back: "They watch it on their phones and on their devices. The best thing about Match Of The Day is the music."
It was announced earlier this week that Gary would step down from Match Of The Day, but would continue with the MOTD Top Ten podcast and The Rest is Football podcast will now be on BBC Sounds.
In a statement, the BBC said: "The BBC and Gary Lineker have agreed in principle a contract extension through to the 2026 World Cup," whilst Lineker added: "I'm delighted to continue my long association with BBC Sport and would like to thank all those who made this happen."
The Rest is Football podcast will feature Lineker, as well as Alan Shearer and Micah Richards and will now have one episode on BBC Sounds each week from next month. On the podcast, they talk about their own careers as well as the latest football news. The podcast is produced by Goalhanger productions, which was co-founded by Lineker.
The BBC said: "With 33 million viewers last season across the Premier League and FA Cup, Match of the Day remains part of the staple diet of football fans who still get a huge buzz from hearing that iconic theme tune on a Saturday night. The show continually evolves for changing viewing habits bringing its unique and unmatched analysis and commentary across all platforms. Future plans for Match of the Day will be announced in due course."
