A woman and her pets have died following a horror fire at a property in Grimsby, police have confirmed.
Neighbours have told of their shock after police confirmed a woman, her dog and cat were killed after a blaze engulfed her home on Sherwood Road. The grandmother, who has not been named, died shortly after 8pm, with police saying officers rushed to the scene on Tuesday night.
said in a statement that emergency services were called to the scene at 8.15pm, and that a woman was pulled out of the smouldering home after the fire was extinguished. A spokesperson for the service said: "The fire was extinguished and upon entering the property, a woman was provided with medical assistance before being taken to hospital to receive treatment.
"Sadly, despite the efforts of emergency services, the woman died a short while later." Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said in its own statement that firefighters were called slightly earlier, at 8.11pm, with investigators confirming that they removed a cooker from the property to carry out their inspections, and an officer confirming her two pets had died.
Two of her neighbours, Wendy and Anthony Powell, told of the shock that has rippled through the community, and remembered the woman following her shock death. Mr Powell said: "She was a nice lady. She was always polite and made us very welcome when we moved in about 10 months ago.
"It’s sad that her pet pug Bella died and her cat. We didn’t smell anything and the first we knew was when the fire brigade arrived. They were giving her CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) for 20 minutes.“ Mrs Powell added that the grandmother was "lovely", adding emergency services did "everything they could" to help her.
She said: "It is sad that she has passed away. She was lovely and looked after her grandkids when they visited, baking cakes with them. The emergency services were really good. They did everything they could to save her.“ An unnamed resident speaking to Grimsby Live said the community "knew it was serious when they were trying to resuscitate her". They added: "We all feel for her family."
Police said that a scene guard remains in place at the property as officers work to establish the cause of the fire, but said there are "not thought to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman’s death". Investigators have issued a plea for information as enquiries continue.
Anyone who may have information that may assist police with their investigation has been asked to contact the police non-emergency number 101. Those who do so will need to quote the log 478 of 12 November.
