Brasilia: Following explosions in the nation’s capital, Brazil’s federal police have opened an inquiry, according to Al Jazeera. One individual was killed by the blasts.
Al Jazeera reports that the explosions happened on Wednesday at the conclusion of the Supreme Court session. Smoke and fire plumes were seen in the air, so the court was evacuated.
“Police officers from the Tactical Operations Command, the Rapid Intervention Group of the PF Regional Superintendence in the Federal District, experts and the institution’s Bomb Control Group were called in and are carrying out initial security actions and analyzing the site,” according to a press release released by the Brazil Police.
Al Jazeera reported that the federal police said they had sent a bomb control unit and a fast action group to the location, which is called Brasilia’s Three Powers Plaza.
“Two loud bangs were heard and the ministers were safely removed from the building,” the Supreme Court of Brazil said in a statement. As a precaution, the headquarters’ servers and collaborators were taken out.
The Supreme Court said that they are awaiting the release of the information and that the probe is still under progress.
It was also said that Luis Roberto Barroso, the president of Brazil’s Supreme Court, and Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil, as well as other high-ranking Brazilian officials, had a conversation.
The Supreme Court buildings will be completely cleaned early Thursday morning, according to Al Jazeera. All buildings’ office hours were halted until noon, and the situation would be reviewed throughout the morning.
According to local media, the explosions happened along a roadway next to an annexe building where a vehicle was parked and close to the Supreme Court. Before the second explosion in front of the court, several witnesses claimed to have seen smoke coming from the car’s trunk.
As of yet, neither a motive nor a suspect in the bombing event on Wednesday have been made public.
According to Celina Leao, the vice governor of the Federal District, which houses the capital, at least one of the explosions occurred while an unidentified person was approaching the Supreme Court’s doors, according to Al Jazeera. She pointed out that he was the same guy who had been killed in the blast.
On X, she gave her press briefing.
Brazil’s federal government is housed at the Three Powers Plaza, which also houses the Supreme Court, the presidential palace, and the buildings housing the two houses of Congress.
Days before the G20 meeting is scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro later this month, the explosions raise serious security concerns.
