India’s captain Rohit Sharma and star batsman Virat Kohli have been told by former Australian bowler Brett Lee to “reset button,” improve their technique, and start strong in the five-Test series against Australia, which starts in Perth in less than ten days.
The two batting mainstays will be closely watched during the Border-Gavaskar series in Australia after their lackluster showing in India’s recent humiliating 0–3 Test loss to New Zealand. “The pressure starts to build when you have two consecutive poor runs. Lee said on his YouTube channel, “I suppose the problem now with someone like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma is that they just have to start over.”
They excel in the fundamentals, which is why they are champions. Then just press the reset button. Lee also cautioned that they should promptly correct their batting as the Australian pacers would be trying to target Rohit and Kohli with the new ball.
The Australian fast bowlers would be targeting Rohit Sharma with that new ball, he said, so “[they] should] work on their technique, freshen up, and get away from cricket for as long as they can before they hit the ground running when they are in Australia.” Kohli has amassed 250 runs in six Test matches this season at an average of 22.72, while Rohit has only scored 588 runs in 11 Test matches at an average of 29.40.
Lee believed that the two hitters’ propensity for being too aggressive may have contributed to their poor performance this season. “It’s difficult to pinpoint the reason why Rohit and Kohli failed. If you look at Rohit Sharma’s escape, it was rather rapid. I’ve seen him play for the last ten years, so I can’t say there’s a technical issue. He may be a little overly aggressive, but I still think he’s one of the finest pull shot players.
Perhaps there were a few photos… was there a problem with technique? Was it a little too early for his bat to leave his pad? Was he moving ahead enough or not far enough? Or was it just a tiny amount of hesitation? Lee pondered.
