With the wedding season underway in India, sending digital invitations through WhatsApp has become quite common due to their convenience. However, a new warning has emerged: Scammers are taking advantage of these digital marriage invitations to steal people's photos and money.
Police alert on WhatsApp marriage invitation scam
Himachal Pradesh Police has issued a warning about scammers spreading malware through digital wedding invites on WhatsApp. These scammers are sending APK files in the form of wedding invitations, which when downloaded can infect devices. Once the malware is installed, it gives hackers complete access to the device, allowing them to send messages, steal personal information, and even withdraw money without the user's knowledge.
How Scammers Work
According to media reports, the scam involves a message from an unknown number containing an APK file labeled as Digital Wedding Invite. When users download this file, a malware-laden app gets installed on their device, giving cyber criminals control over the device.
How are scammers targeting?
Himachal Pradesh Cyber Police requests citizens to be cautious about messages coming from unknown numbers, especially those containing APK files. These files often serve as a means to install malware on the device. Mohit Chawla, DIG, Himachal Pradesh State CID and Cyber Crime Division, advises users to verify any unwanted file or message before downloading and avoid clicking on links from unfamiliar sources.
By following these precautions, users can protect themselves from this emerging WhatsApp scam.
