A common man somehow makes gold jewelery using his hard-earned money. In such a situation, to prevent any kind of fraud, a law has been made for hallmarking jewelery and registering HUID code on it. It has been made mandatory for different cities of the country and now 18 more cities have been included in this list.
The government informed in a notification on Thursday that the fourth phase of mandatory hallmarking for gold jewelery and other artefacts has been started in the country. This time 18 more cities have been included in the list. In this way, now only hallmarking gold jewelery will be compulsorily bought and sold in a total of 361 cities in the country.
According to the government's statement, this extension of mandatory hallmarking is effective from November 5. In this, 18 districts of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Odisha, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have been included. Earlier, this scheme has been expanded in many cities of the country in 3 different phases.

The government said that there has been a significant increase in the number of jewelers selling hallmarking jewellery. Earlier, 34,647 jewelers were registered under this initiative. Now their number has increased to 1,94,039. At the same time, the number of centers testing jewelery and hallmarking it has increased from 945 to 1,622.

According to government figures, more than 40 crore hallmarked jewelery has been sold in the country so far. Unique HUID code is recorded on all of them. HUID code is an alpha numeric code, which gives information about the purity of a jewellery, the lab that tests it and the jeweler who makes it. By entering this code the quality of that jewelery can be checked at any place.
