Thane: An 18-year-old man was arrested for severely assaulting a friend over a cigarette in Maharashtra’s Thane, an official said on Thursday.
The accused has been identified as Ayaz Khalil Momin.
Police said that the two along with other friends were having a meal at a hotel in Bhiwandi.
According to the official, the confrontation began when Momin became enraged after being asked by 30-year-old Aslam Babu Sheikh to share a cigarette.
“The argument escalated, and Momin reportedly pulled out a sharp weapon, attacking Sheikh and leaving him with serious injuries. Following a complaint filed by one of Sheikh’s friends who witnessed the incident, Momin was arrested on charges of attempted murder,” officials said.
“Sheikh is currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital,” they added.
Earlier in October, a labourer was killed by his friend after the latter slit his throat during a fight in Maharashtra’s Latur city, police said.

During the fight, Sultan picked a sharp object and slashed Sayyed’s neck, killing him, a police official said, adding that efforts are underway to arrest him.
On Tuesday, a man was killed and another seriously injured by three persons in the city. The accused were subsequently arrested, police said.
