A wedding ceremony in the Lamba Ki Dhani area of Rajasthan’s Neem Ka Thana district took a dramatic turn when the groom reportedly demanded a dowry of Rs 5 lakh and a motorcycle from the bride’s family immediately after the marriage rituals were completed. This led to a heated confrontation, and the bride refused to leave for her in-laws’ house, resulting in the groom’s arrest.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 12, when Anju Jakhar, a resident, married Vikram, a constable with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) from Chala village. According to reports, the wedding ceremony proceeded smoothly, but the situation took a tense turn when the groom made his dowry demands as the bidaai preparations began.
Vikram, after completing the wedding rounds, allegedly began insisting on additional dowry and a bullet motorcycle before allowing the bride to leave. The bride’s family, however, refused to meet these demands. Reports further claim that the groom behaved rudely and inappropriately with Anju, even during the wedding rituals, and was reportedly under the influence of alcohol.
The situation escalated when Vikram allegedly forcefully grabbed Anju’s hand and tried to drag her towards the car, ignoring her refusal. In response, Anju resisted and stated she would not go with him. As tensions rose between the two families, the bride’s relatives intervened and held Vikram in place, refusing to allow him to leave the venue.
As the argument between the two sides became increasingly heated, the bride’s family contacted the police. Officers from Neem Ka Thana police station arrived on the scene and brought both parties to the station. During questioning, Anju accused her new husband of misbehaving throughout the evening, even during the marriage ceremony itself. She claimed that Vikram and his relatives demanded the dowry from her brothers, who were unable to fulfil the request.
Anju also alleged that Vikram, along with his family members, behaved disrespectfully towards her and the women at the wedding, continuing their inappropriate conduct throughout the night.
Following the police intervention, a case was filed against Vikram and his family. The police arrested the groom, his father Karan Singh, his maternal uncles Kailash and Karan Singh, and his younger brother Rajveer Singh on charges of disturbing the peace and causing public disorder.
The incident stirred significant attention, with local authorities reaffirming their commitment to taking strict action against dowry-related demands and ensuring justice for women in such cases.
