Yet the wealth she amassed largely came not from films but from her political career. In the 1980s Jayalalithaa followed her mentor M.G. Ramachandran and joined his party AIADMK. After serving a term as a Rajya Sabha MP she returned to state politics and served five terms as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. In 1997 authorities conducted a raid at Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence in Chennai a time when she was at the peak of her political career. A subsequent investigation in 2016 reported that her precious metal holdings had increased to 1250 kg of silver and 21 kg of gold.
