The key difference was that her riches were not derived from investments businesses or cars but from her extensive wardrobe and jewellery collection. We are talking about Jayalalithaa the Tamil film icon who became one of the most successful heroines of her time. Spanning two decades her acting career saw numerous hits and made her a household name in both Tamil and Telugu cinema.
Yet the wealth she amassed largely came not from films but from her political career. In the 1980s Jayalalithaa followed her mentor M.G. Ramachandran and joined his party AIADMK. After serving a term as a Rajya Sabha MP she returned to state politics and served five terms as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
In 1997 authorities conducted a raid at Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence in Chennai a time when she was at the peak of her political career. The raid revealed her extravagant lifestyle uncovering 10500 sarees 750 pairs of footwear 91 watches 800 kg of silver and 28 kg of gold.
A subsequent investigation in 2016 reported that her precious metal holdings had increased to 1250 kg of silver and 21 kg of gold. The actress-turned-politician also owned eight cars and legal movable assets valued at Rs 42 crore. Reports suggested that Jayalalithaa’s net worth at the time was Rs 900 crore significantly higher than the Rs 188 crore she had officially declared.
Jayalalithaa was deeply loved and admired both as an actress and as a political leader. She served as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister five times between 1991 and 2016. Tragically she passed away in December 2016 at the age of 68 while serving as the state’s Chief Minister. According to reports the actress net worth during that time was rs 900 crore.
