Bugatti lied to us all, but we aren't mad. In 2019, the hypercar maker announced that it would no longer chase speed records. Five years later, it has done just that: giving the keys of one of its customer's W16 Mistral to Le Mans winner and Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace. The British racing driver took the open-top Mistral to the Papenburg test track in Germany and clocked a top speed of 453.9 km/h. This means that the W16 Mistral is now the fastest-production hypercar in the world, with no roof. Also Read: The new record dethrowns the Hennessey Venom GT Spyder, which clocked a top speed of 427.4 km/h in a similar run in 2016. It also tells us that the W16 Mistral can go much faster than its claimed top speed of 420 km/h. Bugatti performed the top-speed run on November 9 at the Papenburg test track. The proud owner of the Mistral and Bugatti Rimac CEO Mate Rimac was in attendance. The new world speed record for an open-top hypercar is an ideal send-off to Bugatti's 1,578 hp quad-turbocharged 8.0-litre engine. Under Rimac's ownership, the next generation of Bugatti's hypercars will be all-electric.Also Read: The W16 Mistral joins Bugatti's lineup of record-setting hypercars, such as the Chiron Super Sport 300+, Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, and Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse. Though Bugatti makes only 99 examples of the open-top Mistral, the record-setting car is a one-off. The owner, who also owns the previous Bugatti record-holding Chiron and Veyrons, asked the brand to make a single example with a custom carbon and orange livery and use it to set the speed record.
