Sushmita Sen and Manoj Bajpayee ….How does that sound? Vishal Bhardwaj’s film entitled Barf was meant to be an across-the-border Hindu-Muslim love story. Initially, when Vishal narrated the script to some other producers they shied off because of the controversial nature of the story.Vishal was planning to back the film as well as direct it. “I’ve always been an adventurer by nature all my life,” said Vishal who even recorded a song in his favourite singer and idol Lata Mangeshkar’s voice for Barf. The song’s words were written by Vishal’s mentor Gulzar and it spoke of the barf between the two nations melting into a muted merger. Barf was meant to be an Indo-Pak love story with Sushmita Sen cast as a Pakistani airforce pilot and Manoj Bajpayee as an Indian soldier.ALSO READ: Speaking of the aborted project, Manoj says, “Yeah I remember that." He also shared that the movie was supposed to mark Vishal Bhardwaj's debut project." I think it was seen to be politically incorrect. Would you believe I’ve never worked with Vishal to this date? Why? Shayad hamari kundali nahin milti. But I would love to work with Vishal. He is one of the directors with whom I am certain we can do wonders. With Sushmita Sen, I was part of her first film Dastak, though we were not paired together," he adds.Barf never took off, but Vishal Bhardwaj's first movie, Makdee, marked his debut with a unique children’s story. Shabana Azmi took on the role of a witch, a casting choice Vishal hadn’t expected her to agree to. Surprisingly, after hearing the script, she instantly said yes. When it came to discussing her fee, Shabana refused payment, instead suggesting that the money be invested to improve the film's production quality.
