John Fury, father of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, once moved boxing legend Mike Tyson to near tears with the revelation that his son was named after him.
As Mike Tyson prepares for a bout with Jake Paul, and Tyson Fury gears up for a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk, an old clip from 'Boxing Arabia' in 2023 has resurfaced.
In the clip, John Fury surprises the former heavyweight champion by joining him on the show and sharing the story behind his son's name. John said: "I have waited 35 years to meet this man."
He expressed his deep admiration for Mike Tyson, recalling how he would wake up at 3am to watch his fights in the 1980s.
The respect went beyond just being a fan, as John revealed that he named his son Tyson out of admiration for the American boxer. He told Mike: "I said, 'hear these words. [Tyson Fury's] not only going to live.
"He's going to be seven feet tall, 20 stone, and the next heavyweight champion of the world, and his name is Tyson',"
Overwhelmed by the revelation, Mike Tyson abruptly ended the interview, pushing the microphone away and exclaiming: "Time, time, stop, stop."
The respect John Fury held for Mike Tyson was put to the test after Tyson sided with Francis Ngannou against Tyson Fury in their October 2023 clash.
In a fiery press conference, Fury Sr challenged the boxing icon, reminding him of the homage he paid by naming his son after him.
"I'm sat in the company of these great people, Mike Tyson on the end who I named my son after, I named my son Tyson. But you know what? Give me a special mention, the man who bred him," said Fury Sr.
He continued his bold challenge: "John Fury fears no man, no man on earth no matter what they've done, no matter what the accolades. Here I am, any man alive wants to fight John Fury, I'm ready to go, Mike Tyson what have you got to say to that my brother?"
Tyson's succinct reply was that Fury Sr was "out of his mind". Despite this, Fury Sr suspects Tyson's decision to fight Jake Paul is a tactic to dodge him, and he reiterated his challenge in April.
While John Fury has a formidable reputation as a former professional boxer and bare-knuckle fighter, some argue that taking on 'Iron Mike' might be overreaching.
Nonetheless, John Fury remains undeterred in his quest to confront Tyson. Fury expressed incredulity at the situation to Seconds Out, saying: "I'm the same age as him. What the hell is wrong with him."
He went on to disclose that even Turki Alalshikh was surprised by Tyson's decision: "Even Turki said... His Excellency said, 'I'm shocked Tyson didn't want to fight you.'
"I'm shocked myself but I tell you what, I must have a presence - the Gypsy King's dad. He's fighting a middleweight instead of me. But I'll fight anybody, I'm not bothered.
"Let's get me paid - but pay me what I'm worth. You can get killed can't you? But I'm willing to risk my life for the right fight and the right fight is him, Mike Tyson."
