The lawn savants continue with their first cold gardening commandment: "Our first tip for winter lawn care is to take time to tidy away fallen leaves from surrounding trees and shrubbery to avoid a build-up. Not only will your garden look better, but your lawn will thank you for it."
They also touch on the hazards that loitering leaves pose: "Leaves on your lawn can cause fungal growth to form that can end up leaving your lawn patchy."
2. Keep traffic to a minimum
Stepping stones to winter wisdom don't end there—as they underline the importance of minimal lawn traffic: "Walking across frosty or wet lawns can cause all sorts of problems which can easily be avoided," the grassland experts note, reports .
"A waterlogged lawn loses its bounce back factor," they say. "Walking over a waterlogged area will force the air out, and when the soil dries up, it will be heavily packed together, which can cause yellowing grass and stunted growth in the summer."
And when a frost hits? "The same applies to a frosty lawn. Walking across a lawn with frost can break your grass and leave it damaged. The damage will take a few weeks to show, but brown patches will pop up soon after, leaving you with a patchy lawn."
3. Care for your lawn mower
The masters of mowing lay down the law on lawnmower love: giving your trusty grass-cutter the care it deserves makes for a magical reunion come spring. Lawnmowers are put to the test in the spring and summer months, meaning some much-needed TLC can quickly fall down the priority list.
However, winter is a great time to repair and service the mower to ensure it is in tip-top condition for when spring quickly rolls around again. The experts explained: " So don’t neglect that mower—winter’s the ideal time to show it some love!
The experts have spoken: "A glance at your mower blades will help you to see if they need sharpening or not." They warn: "A blunt or dull blade will leave your grass jagged and torn. A simple sharpening of these will make sure your grass gets the finest cut when the mowing season comes back around."
However, they advise against DIY fixes, saying, "Do not attempt to sharpen your blades yourself, instead, take them to a professional. While you're there, it's also great to do a full MOT of your lawnmower, making sure smaller jobs like filling up the oil are complete so that everything is ready to rock once grass growth resumes."
4. Watch out for salt
The pros caution that while gritting pathways and driveways is effective for preventing slips in winter, ensure it doesn't reach the lawn. Salt can be a lawn's worst enemy due to its "damaging effect" as it saps moisture needed for healthy grass.
"When salt comes into contact with lawns, it can cause dehydration, and your grass will become brittle and eventually wilt and die, resulting in some unattractive patches up and down your lawn."
The experts conclude with a seasonal reminder: "Stepping back from your sowing, mowing, and feeding can be hard when the winter months come around, but if you follow our quick tips on how to care for your garden during winter, we can guarantee that your lawn will be ready for spring."
