New Delhi. Amid the long-running caste violence and unrest in Manipur, the Conrad Sangma-led National People's Party (NPP) on Sunday withdrew its support to the BJP's Manipur government. In a letter to BJP national president JP Nadda, the NPP accused Chief Minister N Biren Singh of failing to restore peace in the state. “The Manipur government under the leadership of Chief Minister N Biren Singh has completely failed to control caste violence and restore normalcy,” the letter said.

Questions on the future of the government

After this step of NPP, questions are being raised whether the BJP government in Manipur is in trouble. However, the majority figure in the Manipur Assembly is 31, and the BJP has the support of 37 MLAs. BJP had won 32 seats in the 2022 assembly elections, while the party's strength further increased with 5 out of 6 JDU MLAs joining BJP.

Despite the withdrawal of support by 7 NPP MLAs, there will be no impact on Chief Minister N Biren Singh's government as the BJP has majority on its own.

Meanwhile, Manipur Congress president and MLA Keesham Meghchandra wrote on Am.” On his statement, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “Well done! But the Chief Minister should resign first.”

Tension due to finding bodies of missing people

Six people had gone missing during violence in Borobekra area of ​​Jiribam district of Manipur on November 11. These people belonged to the Meitei community and were living in a relief camp. Recently, bodies of four of these people were recovered, which further increased the tension in Imphal Valley.

The furious mob attacked the houses of many MLAs and ministers. The residence of Chief Minister N Biren Singh was also targeted. Police have arrested 23 people on charges of violence and arson.

Activism of Home Ministry

Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with senior officials of Manipur and the Center on the deteriorating situation in Manipur. Internet and mobile services have been suspended and curfew imposed to prevent violence in the state. The Home Minister canceled his programs in Maharashtra and is closely monitoring the situation in Manipur.
