Manila, November 18 Based on the series of typhoons that have struck the country in recent months, the Philippines has been ‘aggressively’ advocating for more climate funding flows to vulnerable countries, the Department of funding (DOF) said Monday.
Philippine Finance Undersecretary Maria Luwalhati Dorotan Tiuseco led the Philippine delegation in negotiations for the new collective quantified goal, a post-2025 global finance commitment intended to address the changing needs for climate adaptation, mitigation, and resilience, at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, according to Xinhua news agency.
During the High-Level Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Finance, Tiuseco said, “We have been given an unmissable opportunity to shore up the global climate finance war chest, which for many vulnerable countries is a matter of life and death.”
“That is why here at COP29, the Philippines is aggressively pushing for bold actions and sustained, increased financing once and for all for countries that are perpetually on the frontlines of catastrophic typhoons,” Tiuseco said.
The DOF said it has been advocating for an initial climate finance target of 1.3 trillion US dollars annually from developed countries for adaptation, mitigation, and loss and damage in line with the pressing needs of developing nations in the wake of super typhoon Man-yi, the sixth typhoon to hit the Philippines in less than a month.
From November 11 to November 22, COP29 will be held. Trillions of dollars are needed to assist nations cut greenhouse gas emissions significantly and protect people’s lives and livelihoods from the worsening effects of climate change, according to this year’s conference.
