What is a WhatsApp wedding invitation scam?

Actually, for a long time, people have been sending digital invitation cards on WhatsApp and now cyber thugs are taking advantage of this. Cyber thugs are also sending digital wedding invitations to people on WhatsApp, but in reality, it is not an invitation card, but an APK i.e. Android application file. Usually, the digital invitation card is in a PDF file, but cyber thugs are sending APK files to people in the name of the invitation card, after clicking on it an app is installed on people's phones and this app is spying on people.

Himachal Pradesh Cyber Crime DIG, CID IPS Mohit Chawla said that "scammers are now sending wedding invitations in the form of APK files on WhatsApp. When these files are downloaded, malware gets activated in the phone. Through this, cyber criminals completely control the device." Once the malware is activated, cyber scammers can send messages from the phone, steal personal data, and even break into the bank account of the phone owner without his knowledge.

How to avoid WhatsApp wedding invitation scams?

Do not click on any invitation link or attachment sent from an unknown number on WhatsApp.

Do not download APK files received from unknown numbers.

Do not give your personal information like phone number, Aadhaar number, PAN, date of birth, location etc. to anyone.

Do not share the OTP received on your phone number with anyone under any circumstances.
