Indian men's football team ended the year 2024 without any wins as Malaysia drew 1-1 at the Gachibowli Football Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday.
Playing against a lower-ranked Malaysia, the Indian team had a dominant game overall but failed to capitalize on the chances to finish the game in a stalemate.
This draw means that the Indian team will end the year 2024 without a win as this was the last international break window of the year. India has now gone 368 days without a win and is still searching for the first-ever win under new coach Manolo Marquez.
However, the way the Indian team played today might give the fans a glimmer of hope for the upcoming days.
Manolo gave a debut to Irfan Yadwad and he didn't disappoint by any means chasing every loose ball in the first 10 minutes and going for every 50-50 ball.
India was very dominant with their chances in the first 15 minutes but Malaysia started getting into the Indian box after that.
Against the run of the play, India conceded a goal in the 19th minute as experienced goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu decided to rush out of the box in a moment of madness and missed the flight.
All the Malaysian striker Paulo Josue had to do was jog in and tap the ball into the goal. More than a goal, it was like a nasty stab in the hearts of the Indian fans.
India improved after the goal and launched repeated raids to repair the damage.
In the 39th minute, defender Rahul Bheke popped out unmarked to head the pin-point delivery in to make it 1-1 much to the relief of the Hyderabad crowd.
Both teams went with a score of 1-1 in the halftime.
Like in the beginning of the first half, India took control of the proceedings as play resumed after the break, with Chhangte delivering a fine cross into the box with plenty of India players hovering but the Malaysians were up to the task as they thwarted the danger.
India had better chances throughout the half with the likes of Chhangte, Farukh, and Irfan coming close to finding the winner.
However, in the added time, Malaysia went close to finding the winning goal after Fergus Tierney hit the post with his head and Gurpreet had to palm over the following shot.
Despite being a better team, India was guilty of not taking the chances but Manolo will be happy with his debutants who played with passion in the game.
India will return to action when the international window opens up in March 2025.
