Delhi's toxic air has reached its most dangerous level this season. Amidst dense smog and pollution, dealing with the effects of 450+ AQI (Air Quality Index) has become a challenge for every Delhiite. Experts say that even just 1 hour of exposure to polluted air can have a serious impact on your health.

According to experts, particulate matter like PM2.5 and PM10 enter the respiratory tract and cause inflammation in the lungs, causing breathing difficulties. In such a situation, the condition of patients with asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) can worsen.

Pulmonary Specialist Dr. G.C. Singh of PSRI Institute Khilnani says that recently five patients came to his OPD who complained of cough, sore throat, chest tightness, runny nose and breathlessness. These symptoms lasted for 4-5 days, and were not relieved by usual medicines.

Dr. Arvind Kumar, lung expert at Medanta Hospital, explains that microscopic particles affect not only the lungs but also other organs like the heart and brain. Diseases like asthma, pneumonia and allergies are increasing rapidly in children, while the risk of pneumonia and heart diseases has increased in the elderly.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), prolonged breathing in polluted air increases the risk of diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease, and dementia.

* Use air purifiers at home.

* Wear an N95 mask when outdoors.

* Drink more water and eat antioxidant-rich food.

* Avoid going out in the morning and evening, when pollution levels are highest.

Given the increasing health hazards from Delhi's air, it is extremely important to adopt vigilance and preventive measures in time. Your caution is the guarantee of your health.
