My friend who betrayed me came back. What should I do?
Mumbai is where the dreams hit the realities generally. And in this metropolis of Mumbai, lived Aarav and Rohan . More than friends, they were brothers in spirits. There, their bond had been forged since childhood days and has passed several storms. However, it had been broken after two years.
Aarav was the kind of ambitious young man who works in a start-up, always so serious, always so reserved, different from all other colleagues. Rohan, on the other hand, is free-spirited, charming, and charismatic. But despite their differences, they had always complemented each other perfectly-upto that fateful day when Rohan stabbed Aarav right in the back.
The details of the betrayal were simple yet devastating. Rohan had leaked a crucial business idea of Aarav’s to a competitor, lured by the promise of quick money. The betrayal cut deep, and Aarav, feeling the sting of betrayal and loss, severed ties with Rohan. The once inseparable duo went their separate ways, their friendship seemingly broken beyond repair.
Life went on and Aarav kept himself busy with his job. He was fulfilling himself and needed something to distract him from what he had done. Rohan wandered aimlessly, weighed down by the guilt and knowing that he made a grave mistake. But the days started to take their toll, and the weight of his deed haunted him, and he needed to set things right.
Fate stepped in two years later. Aarav sat alone in an al fresco coffee shop, his laptop open, lost in work when, glance up and he saw Rohan standing at the entrance; for a moment, the passage of time seemed suspended. Lines of regret and hope etched on his face, Rohan walked towards Aarav, with each step carrying a little shiver of nervousness.
“Hi Aarav,” Rohan began, his voice trembling slightly. “Can we talk?”
Aarav’s heart raced. Memories of their friendship and the betrayal flashed before his eyes. He struggled with conflicting emotions anger, hurt, and a lingering fondness for the friend he had once cherished.
“I’m not sure what there is to talk about,” Aarav replied cautiously.
“I know I hurt you,” Rohan said, his eyes reflecting genuine remorse. “I made a terrible mistake, and I’ve regretted it every day since. I’m not asking for forgiveness, but I am asking for a chance to make things right.”
Aarav listened quietly. The sincerity in Rohan’s voice was unmistakable, yet the pain of the past was still raw.
“Why now?” Aarav asked. “Why come back after all this time?”
“Because I realised what I lost,” Rohan said softly. “You were not just a friend, but family. I understand if you can’t trust me again, but I wanted you to know that I’m truly sorry.”
He took a deep breath for, to forgive was not an easy way, nor was it letting go of the anger. There could be nothing harder than this, too. He looked into Rohan's eyes, seeing not just the man before him who betrayed him but also the friend who once stood by his side.
“Alright, Rohan,” Aarav said slowly. “Let’s sit down and talk.”
As they shared the quiet hours together, the wounds of yesterday began to heal and a newfound possibility for friendship began to develop again. In the city of Mumbai, there too, two old friends took its first steps in the rebuilding of their bond within its heart, proving that sometimes even the deepest wounds of time combined with genuine remorse can heal.
