New Delhi: In the IPL 2025 mega auction, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) made headlines by bidding a record-breaking ₹27 crore for Rishabh Pant. This marks one of the highest bids in IPL history. Pant, who was released from Delhi Capitals’ retention list earlier this year, now finds himself in the LSG squad.
Speculation is rife that the explosive batsman and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant might be handed the captaincy of LSG. The franchise's hefty bid seems to be a strategic move to secure a captain, a wicketkeeper, and a batsman all in one.
During the auction, LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka hinted at this possibility. However, if Pant is given the captaincy, the team could face challenges in selecting their playing XI.
LSG has invested heavily in both Rishabh Pant and Nicholas Pooran, with Pooran retained for ₹21 crore. Since both are wicketkeepers, managing their roles in the playing XI will require strategic planning. If Pant takes on the captaincy, the team might experiment with opening options like Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh.
Rishabh Pant has previously captained Delhi Capitals for two seasons. While the team didn’t achieve extraordinary results under his leadership, Pant impressed as a batsman and wicketkeeper. His release from Delhi Capitals’ retention list earlier shocked many fans.
With the IPL 2025 season approaching, all eyes are now on LSG’s announcement regarding their captaincy decision. Will Rishabh Pant be their leader on the field? Only time will tell.
