Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said the FIR lodged against opposition leader Rahul Gandhi is a “symbol of the government's desperation” and claimed the BJP is trying to divert attention as it knows the country owes BR Ambedkar's life. Will not tolerate insult.
The Congress general secretary, in an apparent reference to Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks on Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha, said the BJP knows that its true feelings about Ambedkar are out in the open and hence it is afraid of the opposition raising the issue.
He told reporters in the Parliament complex after the Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die – “This government is scared. This government is scared of debate on Adani issue, they are scared of any debate. They know that Ambedkar ji Their real feelings are out in the open and hence they are afraid of the opposition because we are raising this issue,” he said, stressing that the issue of insulting Ambedkar is in the national interest.
He said, “Our Constitution has been given by Dr. Ambedkar, the people of the country and the freedom struggle and the country will not tolerate their disrespect.”
When asked about the FIR lodged against Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi said, “This is a symbol of the government's desperation. They have become so desperate that they are filing false FIRs. Rahul ji can never push anyone.” , I'm his sister, I know him, he could never do this.” He said that the country also knows and is seeing how desperate the BJP has become that they are filing these arbitrary FIRs because they do not want to discuss Adani and they know that the way they have insulted Ambedkar, The country will not tolerate him.
Priyanka Gandhi said, “So they are trying to divert attention.” Police filed an FIR against Rahul Gandhi on Thursday, hours after the BJP accused him of physical assault and instigation during the scuffle in the Parliament complex.
A police officer said that sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 117 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 131 (use of criminal force) of the Indian Justice Code. An FIR has been registered under sections 351 (criminal intimidation) and 3(5) (common intention).
The officer said the police may call Gandhi for questioning in connection with the case. The police will request the Lok Sabha Secretariat to provide CCTV footage of the area where the alleged incident took place. On Thursday, separate marches by opposition and ruling party MPs over alleged insult to Ambedkar led to a scuffle in the Parliament complex, in which BJP MPs Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput were injured.
The BJP has accused Rahul Gandhi of pushing a senior member, a charge the Congress leader has rejected. The opposition on Wednesday took advantage of Shah's remarks on Ambedkar to corner the government and demanded his resignation for insulting the architect of the Constitution.
