India batter Shreyas Iyer, who is coming on the back of a successful outing with his Mumbai side in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, on Saturday, December 21 smacked a 51-ball 100 in their first match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy against biggies Karnataka. Last having appeared in Indian colours four months back, Iyer would consider this tournament as an audition for the upcoming Champions Trophy. Iyer smacked 10 sixes in his 55-ball 114 at a whopping strike rate of 207. Riding on Ayush Mhatre's 78, wicketkeeper Hardik Tamore's 84, Iyer's century and Shivam Dube's 63, Mumbai posted a massive 382/4 batting first. Having opted to bowl first, Karnataka skipper Mayank Agarwal put his bowlers on the line as Mumbai batters went all guns blazing. Having lost Angkrish Raghuvanshi in the fourth over to Vidyadhar Patil, Mhatre and Tamore built a 141-run, potentially match-winning partnership for the second wicket. After Mhatre departed in the 30th over, Tamore and Iyer added 30 runs for the third wicket before the former was dismissed four overs later. Iyer and India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav then built a crucial 56-run partnership for the fourth wicket before the latter was dismissed in the 40th over. The last 10 overs were absolute carnage as Iyer and Dube added 148 runs for the fifth wicket and took Mumbai to 382 batting first. Praveen Dubey picked two wickets but Patil went for 103 runs in his 10 overs despite having provided the initial breakthrough. It is expected that Iyer, who scored truckloads of runs in the ODI World Cup last year, will retain his spot at No. 4 in the Champions Trophy. He fell out of favour after that for not playing domestic cricket but tables have turned over the last few months and a few good performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy might cement his place in the squad.
