Companies and establishments with 10 or more employees come under the purview of the ESI scheme. However, in Maharashtra and Chandigarh, establishments with 20 or more employees come under the purview of this ESI scheme.

In this, an ESI card is issued to the employee. If someone wants to avail of the benefit of free treatment under the ESI scheme, then he has to go to the ESI dispensary or hospital. Through this scheme, apart from the insured person, the family members dependent on him are also given the facility of free treatment. Retired employees and permanently disabled insured persons and their spouses are provided medical care at an annual premium of Rs 120.
The insured person is paid cash compensation at the rate of 70% of wages for a maximum of 91 days in a year for sick leave.
During maternity leave, women are paid 100% of their average wages for up to 26 weeks in case of delivery and 6 weeks in case of miscarriage.
If an insured employee dies during employment, the dependents are paid a monthly pension in a fixed ratio. The pension is divided into three parts - first, the wife of the insured person, second, the children and third, the parents.
