Reliance Retail Indias largest retailer is working to bring back Shein to the Indian market and leading charge for the Chinese clothing brands comeback is none other than Isha Ambani the daughter of Asias richest man Mukesh Ambani. Amidst the PM Modi-led central governments decision to bar Chinese apps in India Isha Ambanis vociferous push in bringing back Shein has garnered significant attention. However the Centre recently gave the green light for Sheins return to the Indian market stating that it has no objections if Shein products are sold by Isha Ambani-led Reliance Retail on an indigenously developed e-commerce platform. According to reports the approval was thoroughly reviewed by concerned ministries including the Home ministry before being okayed. The approval mandates that Reliance Retail would have to ensure that Sheins data practices are fully compliant with Indias stringent data collection privacy and security regulations and all operations and data of the China-based platform must be locally controlled. Shein must adhere to Indian regulations According to details Reliance has to ensure that Shein will not have access to any data collected from Indian consumers -- personal and/or non-personal-- so that all user data stays in the country and theres no risk any foreign entity gaining access to it. The decision to unban Shein marks a major shift in the government stance on foreign e-commerce platforms especially those from China after almost five years of heightened scrutiny and restrictions. In 2020 the Indian government had banned Shein along with more than 300 other Chinese- affiliated/operated apps including the TikTok- a widely-popular short-form video hosting service and UC Browser citing national security concerns. China has frequently criticized Indias move to ban Chinese apps claiming the ban violates World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and harms the rights of Chinese companies. Notably Shein was ranked among Indias top online retailers before its 2020 ban and it would be interesting to see whether it manages to regain its former glory in its second run in the country.
