From customised bands with initials and vows engraved on them to chunky solitaires and stacks of diamond bands, couples are always on a lookout for unique ideas for engagement rings. And lately what seemed to have caught their attention is ‘toi et moi’ rings, which were flaunted by celebs like Megan Fox , Ariana Grande and even Aditi Rao Hydari in one of her wedding posts on social media. Toi et moi, meaning ‘you and me’, is a band with two stones placed next to each other. Various reports suggest that this style of ring became popular in 1796 when Napoleon Bonaparte proposed to Josephine de Beauharnais with one such ring.
‘There has been a surge in demand for toi et moi designs’
The reason why toi et moi rings are gaining popularity among couples is because it symbolises the union of two entities. Ricky Vasandani, CEO and co-founder Solitario Lab Grown Diamonds, says, “The popularity of toi et moi rings have surged, thanks to celebrities like Megan Fox and Ariana Grande, who have redefined this vintage-inspired design as a modern favourite. Featuring two stones symbolising the union of two souls, this style resonates with those seeking romantic symbolism paired with contemporary elegance. We have observed a significant rise in inquiries about toi et moi rings over the past year, fuelled by celebrity engagements. The dual-stone design’s unique appeal and personalisation opportunities make it particularly desirable.”
“The toi et moi style is predominantly associated with solitaire rings, where diamonds take centerstage. The elegance of the design lies in its simplicity, and diamonds perfectly embody the concept’s symbolism of unity and harmony,” adds Yash Kataria, Co-founder, Kumari Fine Jewellery.
‘Classic all-diamond combination remain a favourite’
Toi et moi traditionally features gemstones with matching size and cuts, but over the years there have been many variations in the design. Says Abhishek Kajaria, owner of Avama Jewellers, “Clients’ preferences for stones vary widely. While classic all-diamond combinations remain a favourite, many clients are embracing colourful gemstone pairings like emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. Birthstones are especially meaningful choices. We’ve also seen creative combinations, such as pearls paired with diamonds. For added uniqueness, we’ve incorporated asymmetrical designs, hidden details and diverse metal choices, including rose gold, platinum, and mixed-metal combinations.” Adds Bharti Bangur, owner, Crisanto Jewels, “There’s a shift towards pairing diamonds with pastel-coloured gemstones like morganites or aquamarines for a softer, romantic look. Pearls have also made a comeback, especially for clients looking for a vintage-inspired touch.” “While diamonds remain a staple, alternative pairings like champagne diamonds with coloured gemstones are gaining popularity. Clients are also exploring semi-precious stones like citrines or garnets for a bold statement,” shares Pratik Dugar, director, Indian Gem and Jewellery Creation.
‘Couples often add personal touches such as engraving meaningful dates, initials, or symbols on the band’
Most couples like to go for customisation when it comes to engagement bands and for toi et moi designs, customisation is mostly in the choice of stones. Says Ricky, “Individuals also seek to incorporate birthstones or repurpose heirloom gems into their designs. To complement these distinctive elements, innovative band styles are emerging as popular choices. From twisted or split-shank designs to intricate pavé detailing, these unique settings elevate the overall design of the jewellery.”
“Diamonds paired with tanzanites or unconventional cuts like trillion or kite-shaped stones are popular. Some prefer mixing warm and cool tones, like yellow diamonds with blue sapphires, for a striking contrast,” shares a spokesperson from Mahabir Danwar Jewellers.
“For toi et moi rings, clients often add personal touches such as engraving meaningful dates, initials, or symbols on the band. We also incorporate unique design elements like asymmetrical stone arrangements, intricate metalwork, or hidden gemstones to make the ring truly one-of-a-kind,” says Tiara Dhody, Founder, Treasures By Tiara.
