At least three people, including two children, were killed, and six others were seriously injured after a drunk dumper driver ran over individuals sleeping on the roadside in Pune’s Wagholi, police said on Monday.
The incident took place near Kesnand Phata around 12:30 am on Sunday, police said, adding that the injured were migrant workers from Amravati who had come to Pune.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the dumper driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. A detailed investigation into the matter has been initiated.
The victims who lost their lives have been identified as Vaibhav Ritesh Pawar (1 year old), Ritesh Vaibhav Pawar (2 years old), and Rinesh Nitesh Pawar (3 years old).
Following the incident, a police team promptly arrived at the scene and rushed the victims to Sassoon Hospital for treatment.
In a separate incident, a four-year-old boy was killed after getting hit by a speeding car in Mumbai, which a 19-year-old man was driving, said police officials on Sunday.
The incident occurred near the Ambedkar College in the Wadala area, said the police. The victim’s family lives on the footpath and his father is a labourer.
The accused, identified as Bhushan Gole, was reversing his Hyundai Creta when the incident took place, said police. The driver has been arrested in relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and further investigation is underway.
