In Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, BJP MLA Harish Shakya, his brother Satendra Shakya, and sixteen other people are accused of gang rape. A court order prompted the Civil Lines Police Station to file the lawsuit. Land grabbing, sexual assault, and other crimes are among the accusations.
25 bighas of land worth crores are owned by the victim’s family, who live in a hamlet near Ujhani Kotwali. The Bilsi-representing MLA, a former BJP district president, reportedly sought to buy this property for very cheap prices. The family said they were harassed and threatened when they refused.
The woman claimed that her husband was kidnapped and tortured after a false rape allegation was brought against him. Allegedly, the MLA, his brother, and others sexually abused her after luring her to his camp office under the guise of settling the dispute. She was also reportedly coerced into signing three land-related agreements.
The family went to Leelu Chaudhary, the MP/MLA Special Judge, who gave the police instructions to file a complaint and conduct an investigation. The MLA and the other accused have now become the subject of a formal complaint from the police.
A pattern of claimed harassment and threats is described in the victim’s complaint. She said that Rohit, her cousin, was abducted, assaulted, and coerced into selling her family’s property. Rohit reportedly committed himself in August 2022 after the trauma. The family also claimed that the government did little to address their efforts to get justice.
Additionally, the victim claimed that the accused damaged their standing crops and coerced them into selling the farm for less money.
MLA Harish Shakya, however, has refuted the claims, claiming they are unfounded. The BJP leader said that he has complete trust in the courts and police and that it was a plot to damage his reputation.
In the meanwhile, the police have opened an investigation since the matter has caused grave worries. A comprehensive investigation, including narco and polygraph testing, has been sought by the victim’s relatives.
