Chelsea wasted the opportunity to take the lead in the Premier League following a 0-0 draw at Everton on Sunday, while Manchester United suffered a crushing 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth.
After the worst outcome of his short tenure, United manager Ruben Amorim, who once again left Marcus Rashford out of his team, is going to have an unhappy Christmas.
Since Amorim joined from Sporting Lisbon, United, now in 13th position, has lost four of their last nine games in all competitions.
Amorim believes that United’s route back to the top will be lengthy and difficult, as shown by their second straight defeat after their League Cup departure against Tottenham on Thursday.
In the 29th minute, Bournemouth’s young defender Dean Huijsen took advantage of poor marking at a free kick to nudge a header past Andre Onana, exposing United once again at set pieces. After Noussair Mazraoui’s foul on the forward in the 61st minute, Justin Kluivert increased fifth-place Bournemouth’s lead, making things considerably worse for Amorim in the second half. Two minutes later, Antoine Semenyo added to United’s suffering with a slick finish after Dango Ouattara’s pass.
Saka was hurt in the Arsenal defeat.
Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, said that he was “quite concerned” about an injury sustained by star winger Bukayo Saka during Saturday’s 5-1 victory against Crystal Palace.
After a game in which the Gunners moved within three points of Premier League leaders Liverpool, Saka, who was substituted out halfway through the first half, was seen leaving Selhurst Park on crutches. Kai Havertz charged in after Gabriel Jesus scored two and was only stopped from scoring a third by the width of a post.
Early in the second half, Palace attacker Ismaila Sarr had failed to capitalize on two good chances to draw the score at one.
