Zeenat Aman has played glamorous characters in most of the films in the 60-70s. His films and roles have been liked a lot by his fans and his songs are listened to extensively even today. In 1971, a film by Zeenat Aman and Devanand was released, 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna'. This film was a hit and for this Zeenat Aman also won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Asha Bhosle received the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song 'Dum Maaro Dum'. At that time everyone was seen dancing to this song. It is said that this song used to be in the favorite list of drug addicts also. But what happened was that this song was banned by the then government. Let us know.

The song 'Dum Maaro Dum' from the film 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna' had music by RD Burman and the song was written by Anand Bakshi. All the songs of the film were greatly liked, but at that time there was a lot of controversy regarding 'Dum Maro Dum'. RD Burman and Anand Bakshi themselves had revealed during an interview that the then government had banned it. But after a lot of struggle, this song was released in its original form only.

Why was Dum Maro Dum banned?

RD Burman and Anand Bakshi had told that “Dum Maaro Dum was asked to be banned because the government had objection to linking the name of Lord Ram with Dum. That is why initially DD and AIR had refused to show or broadcast it. Then the government also said that because of this song, hippie culture will be promoted in the country. This happened because in the song Zeenat Aman was shown dancing with hippies and inhaling pipe.

When Zeenat actually took puffs of pipe

Once Zeenat Aman also shared the story of 'Dum Maaro Dum' on her Instagram. She had told that she was really drunk during the shooting of this song. Zeenat had written, “This song was being shot in Kathmandu, and Dev Saheb had collected hippies from the streets for this. At that time the hippies were very proud of their luck. He was happy because not only was he getting a chance to smoke pipe, but he was also getting free food and money. Dev Saheb wanted this scene to look real, so I was continuously taking puffs of the pipe for each take. After which I became quite drunk.”
