R Ashwin announced a shock retirement from international cricket after the third Test match against Australia last week and he returned home a day later. Ashwin, who went to Australia as India's most experienced spinner, was benched for the first and third Test matches. Ashwin's retirement hinted that India do not have any plans for him.The selectors weren't expected to announce his replacement as Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar are already part of the squad. But the BCCI has decided to send an additional spinner to Australia.Tanush Kotian has been handed his maiden India call-up and he will leave for Australia soon. One of the best red-ball players in domestic cricket at present, Kotian is an all-rounder like Ashwin. Kuldeep Yadav, who could have been in contention, is injured and presently out of action.Tanush has 101 wickets and 1525 runs in 33 first-class matches. He has also played 20 List A matches and 33 T20s. Kotian was part of the India A squad for the unofficial Test matches against Australia. The matches took place before the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.Ravindra Jadeja looks all but confirmed to retain his spot for the Boxing Day Test match, starting December 26. India could play with two spinners in Sydney.Series levelled 1-1The five-match Test series between India and Australia is levelled 1-1. Led by Jasprit Bumrah, India kicked off the series with a win in Perth. Australia won the pink-ball Test in Adelaide while the third game in Gabba ended in a draw.The action will now move to Melbourne, which is scheduled to host the fourth Test from December 26 to 30. The fifth and final Test of the series will be played in Sydney from January 3 to 7. India won the last two Border-Gavaskar Trophies Down Under.
