When massive stars and a renowned director come together for a movie it is usually considered a guaranteed hit even before its release. However there was a time when superhit actors came together for a film but the director wasn’t very confident about it. In fact the movie barely earned anything in its first week and was almost written off as a disaster. But surprisingly things took a sudden turn and the fate of the movie the director and the actors changed completely. The movie was Yash Chopras Daag.
The film began to attract audiences
Its said that despite the star power of Rajesh Khanna Rakhee and Sharmila Tagore Yash Chopra was not very sure about the film. Therefore he decided to release it in just 9 theatres across the nation. The movie struggled at the box office at the start and earned very little in its first week. In fact the movie seemed as though it might be a flop. It is also said that Rakhee gave Rs 3 lakh from her own pocket to make the film.
However within a short time it began to create a buzz thanks to word-of-mouth publicity. The film began to attract audiences. Within six days of the films release the number of prints had to be tripled. Despite a modest budget of 60 lakh rupees Daag went on to earn about Rs 3 crores making it the third highest-grossing film of the year.

The adaptation of the 1886 Thomas Hardys The Mayor of Casterbridge Daag featured a stellar cast including Rajesh Khanna Sharmila Tagore and Rakhee in lead roles along with Madan Puri Kader Khan Prem Chopra and A. K. Hangal in pivotal roles. At the 21st Filmfare Awards Daag received 7 nominations including Best Film Best Actor and Best Actress Best Director and Best Supporting Actress. Interestingly Yash Chopra used Raakhees character name Chandni in his later films Silsila and Chandni.
