New Delhi: A missing girl was found dead in an army cantonment area in the national capital's Vasant Vihar, the police said. The cops said the 8-year-old girl was allegedly strangled and her body was dumped in the area after she resisted a rape bid by a teenager living in her neighbourhood. She has been missing since Monday evening.According to PTI, the girl lived in army servant quarters and her body was found with a noose around her neck in a vacant house in Shankar Vihar Military Station Tuesday morning. The police said the accused is a 19-year-old youth from the same area who was identified with the help of the CCTV camera. As per the report, the accused's parents also work as servants at an army officer's house.An officer told PTI, "During interrogation, the accused revealed that he lured the victim, who used to call him brother, to an isolated house in the locality and tried to force himself on her. When she resisted, he strangled her."The officer further said the accused initially tried to mislead the cops as he had tied a scarf around her neck to show it a suicide. The body was found near a window in the room, he said.The news agency mentioned that a neighbour said the girl went missing around 6 pm Monday. "Her parents informed the army officers after failing to find her. The army personnel also helped the family in finding the girl," he said, PTI quoted.Unable to trace her, the parents informed the police at 1 am and a search operation was launched. The girl's body was found at 8 am in the morning, the police said. Angry members of the victim's family and other residents held a protest seeking justice.They raised questions on the safety of children inside the army camp. The matter was later handled by the army and police personnel. The accused has been arrested and after a case of kidnapping registered against him. Police said that the sections of murder and others will be added to the FIR.
