In 2022 many South films made huge profits at the box office with films like Yashs KGF 2 and SS Rajamoulis RRR making history. However a Rs 100 crore film released during this time flopped badly at the box office. Directed by Mohan Raja it was a remake of the 2019 Malayalam film Lucifer. Released theatrically on October 5 2022 this superstars film received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Despite the reviews the film was a box office failure earning Rs 108.7 crore (US$13 million) against a production budget of Rs 120 crore (US$14 million).
We are talking about Godfather a Telugu action thriller film starring Chiranjeevi Salman Khan Nayanthara Satya Dev Murali Mohan Puri Jagannadh and Murali Sharma. The film was released in 2022 with the 69-year-old Chiranjeevi playing the lead role as the hero while Nayanthara appeared in an important role. There was significant buzz around the film before its release largely due to a special appearance by Salman Khan.
Salman Khan may have had a cameo role in Godfather but he was given ample screen space showcasing impressive action scenes. His performance was widely praised. However after the film hit theatres things took a turn at the box office. Salman made his debut in Telugu cinema with Godfather alongside Chiranjeevi but even his star power couldn’t save the film from flopping. As a result the film failed to achieve significant box office earnings.
According to IMDb Godfather earned Rs 28.85 crore on its opening day and went on to make Rs 87 crore in India. The total worldwide earnings stood at Rs 107 crore. While the film managed to recover its production costs it still couldn’t be classified as a hit.
The box office verdict for Chiranjeevis Godfather is a flop. The film didn’t meet expectations despite the star power. Interestingly Salman Khan who had a special appearance did not charge any fee for his debut in Telugu cinema unlike his usual hefty fees for appearances in films.
