This is the most recent in a series of traffic incidents that have occurred in Tamil Nadu in the last month. Three Keralans, including a two-month-old baby, were killed in a terrible incident in the Coimbatore district on December 12. The Alto vehicle they were driving collided with a truck at Madhukarai, causing the disaster. The dead were named as 60-year-old Jacob Abraham, his 55-year-old wife Sheeba, and their 2-month-old grandson Aaron, who lived in Eraviperur in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district.
Aleena, Jacob’s 21-year-old daughter and Aaron’s mother, is still in serious condition at the hospital. At the time of the accident, the family was traveling from Pathanamthitta to Bengaluru.
On November 27, a minibus and a scooter crashed on the National Highway near Salem, resulting in another fatality. P. Periyasamy, 60, a resident of Veerapandiyar Nagar in Salem, was killed instantaneously while riding a motorbike. A gasoline tank leak caused the bus, which was carrying thirty people, to topple over and catch fire. Thankfully, none of the passengers were harmed.
In spite of these incidents, the Tamil Nadu Police announced that, from January to July 2024, there were 5% fewer fatal traffic accidents and fatalities than during the same time in 2023.
In the first seven months of 2024, 10,066 fatal accidents were recorded, resulting in 10,546 fatalities, according to Director General of Police Shankar Jiwal. Compared to the 10,589 accidents and 11,106 fatalities recorded over the same time period in 2023, this is an improvement.
Stricter enforcement of traffic laws, campaigns against drunk driving, the installation of highway patrols on national highways, the identification of accident hotspots, and the repair of road problems are some of the major initiatives that have contributed to this progress. The Tamil Nadu Police emphasize that the state’s traffic safety has greatly increased as a result of these activities.
