Former prime minister Manmohan Singh was admitted to the emergency dept of AIIMS Delhi after his health deteriorated on Thursday evening. The reason for the hospitalisation was not immediately known. He is currently undergoing tests and is being attended to by a team of multiple doctors. Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was en route to Delhi as soon as reports of the veteran Congress leader's hospitalisation emerged. Security has been heightened at AIIMS. A statement is expected from the hospital shortly.
Congress leader and former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot tweeted, "Deeply concerned about the health of Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh ji. Wishing him a speedy recovery and good health."
Manmohan Singh served as India's 14th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, overseeing a period of significant economic progress. His leadership saw the introduction of key reforms such as the Right to Information Act and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. It also saw the landmark Indo-US Civil Nuclear Deal.His tenure was, however, marred by criticism over corruption scandals and accusations of indecisiveness in leadership.Singh began his political career in 1991 as Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, spearheading economic reforms that opened up India’s economy, paving the way for rapid growth and globalisation.Prior to that, he held prominent roles such as Chief Economic Advisor, RBI Governor, and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission (now Niti Aayog).
